For those that want the roominess of a family sedan, but the performance of a muscle car, you’re in luck. Dodge has just unveiled the 2012 Charger SRT8 at the Chicago Auto Show. This new model promises “intelligent performance” thanks to its Hemi V8 under the hood.

“We’re continuing the fast-paced rebuilding of Dodge as our performance brand, and the expansion of our SRT product lineup in 2012 is an important part of our rejuvenation,” said Ralph Gilles, President and CEO, Dodge Brand – Chrysler Group LLCs.

Power is supplied by a new 6.4-liter version of Chrysler’s Hemi V8, which produces 465 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy is aided by the automaker’s Fuel Saver technology, which allows the engine to run on just four cylinders at cruising speeds. The engine is mated to a five-speed automatic transmission that allows drivers to shift their own gears via the AutoStick or the steering-wheel paddle shifters.

Everett Dodge said that other performance enhancements include 20-inch forged aluminum and polished wheels, adaptive damping suspension with Auto and Sport settings, large 14.2-inch brakes, and four-inch dual exhausts out back. Inside, the interior of the SRT8 features a performance steering wheel and a 900-watt, 19-speaker Harmon Kardon audio system.

Giles added: “The new 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 builds on the iconic four-door fastback coupe design of the all-new Charger and adds a much larger power band across the rpm range, along with intelligent performance attributes and safety and creature comforts for customers who are passionate about performance driving.”

Look for the 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 in showrooms this fall.
