On the heel’s of the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee’s release, it seems like it would be only a matter of time before details of the next generation Dodge Durango emerged. It seems that time is now as the folks at Carscoop have just got their hands on authentic sketches of the new Durango.
Previous Dodge Durangos have been bona fide SUVs, riding on tough truck-based chassis. The all-new 2012 Dodge Durango may end up sharing more in common with the upcoming Grand Cherokee, including its more car-like unibody construction. However, the Duranog is expected to ride on a slightly longer version of the Cherokee’s platform, which is derived from the Mercedes-Benz ML.
The sketches appear to be remarkably similar to the string of 2012 Durango spy photos that have already hit the Web. This includes the pronounced front and rear fenders, the general shape of the windows, and even the tail lights match up well.
It’s expected that the next generation Dodge Durango will also share the Grand Cherokee’s 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine that produces 280 horsepower. Like previous generations, the new During is also likely to offer a larger V8 option such as a 360 horsepower 5.7-liter V8.
Sport utility vehicles like the Dodge Durano are facing different consumers and a different market these days. Traditional SUVs like the Nissan Pathfinder have still performed well among Boston Nissan dealers simply because it offers buyers many choices in terms of power, amenities, and utility. But overall, consumers are increasingly interested in more car-like crossovers that deliver strong fuel economy.
