With a proven 392-cubic inch (6.4-liter) HEMI V8 engine under the hood, cranking out 470 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque, it goes without saying that the Dodge Challenger is a solid performer. But a slew of innovative technology helps this muscle perform even better for the 2012 model year.
Chrysler’s innovative Fuel Saver Technology would have to be one of the most attractive features on the 2012 Challenger. On models equipped with automatic transmissions, this system allows the engine to operate economically on four cylinders or use the power of all eight cylinders when needed. Despite its powerful engine, the Challenger can still achieve as much as 23 miles per gallon on the highway. [click to continue…]

As part of a $100 million joint research partnership between the Chrysler Group and the U.S. Department of Energy, a fleet of 10 plug-in hybrid Ram 1500 pickups is now undergoing hot-weather testing in Yuma, Ariz. According to Dodge Dealerships Minneapolis, It’s the first stage in a comprehensive testing and demonstration program that will eventually see some 140 of the trucks working across the country to prove their mettle—and contribute significantly to the automaker’s electric-vehicle efforts.

That hybrid powertrain is expected to provide the Ram 1500 with an all-electric, no-emissions driving range of up to 20 miles, after which the vehicle’s standard internal combustion engine takes over to provide an overall range of 655 miles (when starting with a full tank of gas and full battery charge). The engine also can help to recharge the battery, or drivers can plug the truck into a 110- or 220-volt outlet for a quicker “refill.” Combining the results from both its gas engine and its electric motors, the Ram plug-in hybrid achieved the equivalent of 32 mpg in initial testing.
